BIG-FOOT WALLACE of muddy water, from which we procured enough to quench our thirst. Some miles further on we came to a ranch, and finding out from the people living there that we were considerably to the east of the course we wished to pursue, we turned more to the west and traveled on till night overtook us, when we encamped at the foot of a mountain. The next morning we were on the way again by sunrise, and after going some distance we came to the road running to Monclova. This we followed for a few miles, when we met an Englishman (an old acquaintance of Captain Cameron), who advised us to go with him to a ranch he owned near by, where he told us he could furnish us with provisions, of which by this time we were nearly destitute He urgently advised us not to leave the road and go off into the mountains, as the majority of our men and officers were in favor of doing, and told us there were no troops along the road to intercept us, and that if we abandoned it and turned off through the desolate and mountainous country that lay in the direction we proposed traveling, we would inevitably perish for want of food and water. Well would it have been for us if we had done as this Englishman advised, for I am satisfied now that he was truly anxious to aid us in effecting our escape into Texas; but somehow the ma. jority of us came to the conclusion that he was not to be trusted, and that he was merely seeking to delay us on the way until a sufficient force should have time to pursue and overtake us. So we declined accepting the friendly offers and advice of the Englishman, and continued our route until late at night, when we came to a 201
