WINNING nine out of twelve games, tying in two, and losing
only one, Michigan's tennis team completed the most successful
year since the net game became a Varsity sport. In defeating Lansing, Saginaw, Michigan Aggies, Illinois, Carnegie Tech, Penn State,
Lehigh, Wisconsin and Minnesota, the racket wielders made an
enviable record. They broke even with Carnegie Tech and lost to
Swarthmore by the close score of four to three.
Michigan took her share of the victories in the Conference
matches, by winning three and tying for one. She defeated Illinois
by a score of 4-2; Wisconsin 6-0; Minnesota 5-1; and tied with
Chicago 3-3.
In the Conference meet "Chuck" Merkle proved his worth by
annexing the Singles Championship.
The team of 1923 was composed of Captain Rorich, Fred
Sanchez, Charles Merkle, and Edward Kline. Kline and Sanchez
will be lost by graduation, leaving Merkle and Rorich as the experienced men. With the consistent playing of these two men and
with a strong Freshman team Michigan's hopes for 1924 look very
