i T, I W ITH five of seven men comprising last year's team back in school, prospects of another
j V cross country championship were very bright. Despite the fact that no one could fill
the niche left by Egbert Isbell, last season's Conference champion, the team composed of
Captain Arndt, Captain-elect Shenefield, Davis, Bowen, Rearick, Reinke, M., and Griffen
was a fast and formidable one. In Mason, Polhamus, Hicks, Callahan, and Kryznminski,
Coach Farrell had a reserve squad on which he could depend.
In the first event of the season, October 27, Michigan swamped the Aggies by taking the
first nine places with a score of 15-40. On November 3, in the annual Harpham Trophy Race,
Harry Davis set a new record for the five-mile Ferry Field course, covering the distance in
27 minutes, 16 seconds. The next week end at Ferry Field, Michigan received her first defeat
of the season when Ohio won the Triangular Meet, which is held annually between Ohio,
Illinois and Michigan. Arndt, the first Michigan man, placed fourth. On the morning of
November 17, Michigan overcame Wisconsin over the latter's own course, by a score of 24-31.
The Conference Meet, November 24, was held over a wet and slippery course at Columbus. As a result of the dinner eaten before the meet, the Michigan men were subjected to
an attack of ptomaine poisoning, which, although slight, was enough to prevent them from
performing as usual. In such a condition Michigan had to be content with sharing fifth place
with Ames. Ohio, contrary to expectations won the meet.
