Ralph Craig, '12. While in college S i held the world's record of 21 1-5 V seconds for the 220 yard dash, and tied the world's record of 9 4-5 seconds in the IOO yard dash. In I9IO and a'gain in I9II Craig won both the IOO and 220 yard dashes at the Eastern Intercollegiate meet, making both of the above marks in that meet. He was a member of the American Olympic team at Stockholm in I912, and won the I0o meter race, the greatest possible achievement for a track athlete. John L. Lavan, '14M. Starred at shortstop on the I9I2 Varsity nine and was one of the strongest batsmen in the West that season. The following season he joined the St. Louis Browns under Branch Rickey, former LAVAN CRAIG Wolverine baseball coach, and played throughout the season on this team, although he was not yet through school. He helped coach the varsity nine each. 4 year until his graduation and was instrumental in procuring George Sisler for the Browns. He was sold to the Philadelphia Athletics toward the close of the I914 season, just a week before the Athletics clinched the American league pennant and received a share of the World Series money. When Branch Rickey became interested in the St. Louis Cardinals he got his former pupil back to St Louis where he is at the present time. Harry S. Hammond, '08E. Varsity football end for four years, playing before the freshman residence rule was used at Michigan. Harold L. Smith, '16. In his track career at Michigan, Smith was captain of the team twice, and in I9I5 won both the IOO and 220 yard dashes' at the Eastern meet, and I9I6 won the former event and took second in the latter. He placed in both events in his sophomore year, making six Intercollegiate places in three years, an achievement which ranks him with Ralph Craig among the greatest of Michigan sprinters.
