John F. Maulbetsch, '17. A regular on the Michigan Varsity at left
half from the first day he reported,
three times an All Western selection,
an All-American half when a sophomore and captain of the team in I9I6,
are a few achievements of the "German
Bullet" as Maulbetsch was called after
he had torn the Harvard line to pieces
in I914. Since graduation he has
coached at Phillips University at Enid,
Oklahoma, and has turned out some
of the best teams in that section of the
United States.
Tom S. Hammond, '06L. Halfback
on Yost's great elevens of I9o4,'05
and 'o6, when with Heston and Longman he was considered one of the best

backs in the country.
J. C. Garrels,'07. Another great allaround athlete. Garrels was an intercollegiate winner in both hurdle
events, the discus and the shot put.
To this he sometimes added the 440
yard dash, in which event he held the
Michigan record of 53 seconds for
several years. In the discus he was
supreme, winning this event every
time he competed in it during his college career. He was captain of the
track team in I907, in whichyear the
Varsity won the Penn relay games
and the Western Conference title.
Not content with honors in track
Garrels played Varsity football for
two years, and made a great name
for himself as fullback of the I9o05 and
'o6 elevens.
Frank Longman, '06. That he was
Varsity fullback in the days of Heston
and Garrels is high praise, for the record of these mighty years is still sweet
to Michigan football supporters.
Longman was one of the greatest
plunging backs of his time, and completed a perfect backfield. After graduation he coached at Notre Dame for
several seasons.
