DUNNE One of the chief reasons for the remarkable spurt of the Varsity from mid season on. One of the best centers in the Conference. had been placed in the Illini win column by critics. Ohio came next, and, playing in Columbus, the Michigan basketeers ran wild, throwing I7 field baskets. Michigan won by two points the final game from Illinois, the game that closed the I921 season in glorious fashion. Williams and Captain Karpus, playing their last game for the Wolverines were stars of the first magnitude. It was the injection of Captain Karpus and Dunne into the game that improved the Michigan team. Previous to that time the Wolverines were without an accurate basket or foul shot, and they lacked the fight that these two men were responsible for in the later contests. Michigan won both of the games played with M. A. C., a feat that the Wolverines have never turned before. By the addition of these two to the win column, Michigan won a total of sixteen games, and lost only four. It is unfortunate that these games were the very ones that kept Michigan from claiming the Conference championship. In any consideration of the players on the 1921 Varsity, Captain Joe Karpus leads, because of his high scoring ability, and the spirit which he put into the team. Karpus was the leading scorer of the team, both this year and last. He also ranked high in the Conference. It was his foul shooting that pulled more than one game out of the fire, during 1921. His performance in the first Illinois game, when he threw nine fouls out of a possible eleven will stand out as one of the most brilliant individual records of the season. Karpus coupled to his basket shooting ability an uncanny knack at dribbling. With the possible exception of Schuler, Indiana's speedy little right forward, the Michigan captain was best hand at dribbling in Waterman gym this past season. Michigan will miss Karpus in 1922, because of the high degree of efficiency with which he could play his position. Three Hundred Thirty-five I I... ~- ~, - -a LI 't - a I
