1920 VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY TEAM

Cross Country
Michigan received an overwhelming defeat at the hands of Purdue, score 38 to
17, on Oct. 30 at Lafayette. Furnas of Purdue, Conference two mile champion,
won the race in an easy manner, finishing well in the lead. Freeborne of Michigan
was the first Wolverine to cross the finish line, placing in fourth position. Whittemore, Pemberthy, Standish, and Brannon, all of Michigan were the last four men
in.
The Maize and Blue was forced to trail the M. A. C. squad in the all-state
cross country run at Lansing on November 6, the event was a decisive one, inasmuch as the Farmers took permanent possession of the state trophy by the victory.
The score was M. A. C. 31, Michigan 26, making the third victory for M. A. C.
and the one that was necessary to give them permanent possession of the state
trophy. Freeborne finished third for Michigan, Whittemore fourth, Pemberthy
seventh, Standish eighth, Brannon ninth, and Douglas eleventh.
Illinois was the first visitor to Ann Arbor and gave the Wolverines a I6 to 40
defeat on the day of the Chicago football game. Captain Allman of Illinois led
the field over the course in the remarkable time of 26 minutes and 27 seconds,
the best that has been recorded over the Geddes course in the last seven years.
Illinois placed five of the first six men who crossed the finish line, showing a strong
well balanced team. Whittemore placed fifth for Michigan, Freeborne seventh,
Chute eighth, and Standish ninth.
Michigan finished seventh in the conference meet, Nov. 20.
