II, 35 to o, and followed this a week later by making the same score on the Michigan Agricultural College. These early games were without feature, and served merely to get the Michigan machine in readiness for the Illinois game, by far the most important on the schedule. Illinois entered the Michigan game under necessity of winning to have a clear claim to the Conference title. Michigan had lost honor to retrieve. The final result, Illinois 7, Michigan 6, vindicated both elevens, and gave Michigan the right to claim a team nearly as strong as that of the victors, since the margin between was only that of a missed goal. Michigan missed the goal, and thereby lost the opportunity of the year. Holding doggedly to the six point margin, aided by spectacular feats of defensive play on the part of Captain Goetz, Dunne and Steketee, Michigan looked to be winner until late in the second half when Illinois passes scored a touchdown, and what was more important, the resultant goal. Michigan had lost the crucial game of the year, but had so nearly won that she was a factor to reckon with for the rest of the year. The Tulane game, Oct. 30, won by Michigan 21 to o, was an anti-climax, and only the intersectional nature of the contest, and the fact that GermanySchultz, ji~i.... 3 i X S, - D~ i i. ii Is 2 B fi i!i C'* '' il. v':ji '1..;,.. ~t e i ~:::!,i 9 r i i,i'' 131 I I I *4 *;E~, J i j I Ib ~ ' jr:~ ~ ` I: ii 1 1;-.:.. !?~,I~S lir~ r~ '' r:: ~; '-L "~i u ~~~!.f;r Cn r L' ~'; f ~ ' j i r ; j ~ 'i ii i: ') 1 1 r ~ ' i: i! i r The Michigan line holding Case, when the Wolverines won 35 to o.
