Total. 7.37 18.71 2.13 9.42 2.45 5.35 The above analyses are by Professor Horsford, and are from one hundred thousand parts,'while the analyses of London water were from seventy thousand parts, making the contrast greater than appears in the figures by nearly one third. Professor Benjamin Silliman remarked in his report on Cochituate water, that it is so nearly pure as to answer very well for chemical purposes, for which distilled water is generally used. The reason of its purity is evident. Cochituate Lake, being supplied mainly from springs coming through pure granite sand, and resting also on pure sand, and not being much exposed to the influence of decaying vegetable matters, it has no source of supply either of organic or inorganic material. The importance of pure water, as a means of preserving health, will be understood by all who have given attention to the laws which I have endeavored to explain, by which all elements not organized in pure water, pure air, and appropriate food, are rejected by
