Polybus I take to be another form of Polybius (IloXfwcos, " having full vigour of life"). Jocasta says, "'lie comes from Corinth, proclaiming that thy father is no longer Polybus (i. e., in full life) but dead." The audience would recognize this play of words, and moreover have in mind that which Jocasta did ndt intend, viz., that his father was not (ever) Polybus. 958. —rpjnTov7 i. e., before I tell you the good part of my message, viz.. your election.
