TM AUTHOL Xi!L stay in town. At length his medical attendants consented to his removal to Scotland; and on the 7th of July everything was prepared for his journey by the steam-boat. When the vessel arrived at Newhaven, Sir Walter, prostrate in his carriage, was slung on shore in apparent unconsciousness; but when he reached Abbotsford, "his dogs assembled about him, began to fawn upon him, and to lick his hands, and he alternately sobbed and smiled over them until sleep oppressed him.' For four or five days after his arrival he desired daily to be wheeled about the house and the garden, but on the 16th he remained in bed, and was quite feeble; on the following day he requested to be placed at his desk, and when the pen was put into his hand, he was unable to close his fingers upon it, and the pen dropped upon the paper. From this time he declined daily, when, on the morning of the 17th of September, he was discovered in the last extreme of feebleness; and except for a moment, he never afterwards gave any sign of consciousness. On the 21st, he breathed his last, in the presence of al his children, io be siaty-second year of his aa.
