were deterred by the obloquy which they would incur by
rendering assistance to an abolitionist. I therefore determined to remain quietly in prison till the appointed day,
and then to go through with the trialwhich I well knew
would be a mere form, as everything would be properly
cut and dried before that time.
My wife and son, with others of my family, who had
come to testify at the trial, went back to Lawrence to cultivate our farm, and try to raise the money needed for the
costs and expenses, which were quite heavy.*
* The expense consequent upon our being kidnapped and carried off by the chivalrous
Missourians exceeded eleven hundred dollars, besides the one thousand appropriated by
the Legislature of Kansas, and not including the value of the property which was stolen
from me, or lost. Of course the payment of so much money, though we were assisted
by friends, exhausted all our means, and my family have suffered severely in consequence.
