366 GLOCESTER. The average age of the scholars is less than in former years. A larger proportion of the older and more advanced are sent away to higher institutions in other towns. SUPERVISION. Formerly the supervision of the schools was in the hands of the committee and was generally divided among its members. But since the enactment of the law requiring the appointment of a superintendent the care of the schools has been committed to that officer. This gives unity to the work and secures better results.
