BEYOND THE WEST. crowded great events of the coming century. The noble work now established across the continent will go on. We indulge in the bright vision of healthful progress all over our land, from the first headland our progenitors saw on the Atlantic coast to the last promontory on the Pacific, which receives the parting kiss of the setting sun. Kind reader, the only apology I have to give you for the unusual length of these articles, is their importance to us, also to the whole family of man. We too often forget (not that we are ungrateful) the beginnings of what we now are. It becomes the children of noble progenitors to turn back occasionally the well-filled pages of time, pass to where they had a parentage, where the underlying principles were established from which a nation has grown by steady steps, great and prosperous at home, and sent back to the old world the healthful influence of a better civilization, in which every soul has an interest, and can breathe freer wherever the atmosphere of heaven has worked a pair of human lungs. "'Tis yours to judge how wide the limits stand between a great and happy land, from ocean to ocean."
