CHAP TER II. THE DISCOVERY OF THE AMERICAN CONTINENT. Kind reader, as our outfit (always familiar on the borders of civilization, beyond which the traveler must carry everything he needs on the journey) as yet is so incomplete, and being far away from an outfitting centre, we are quite unprepared to start on the long travel before us, consequently you are invited first to go with me through an address on the Discovery of the American Continent; after which, should we be in good humor with each other and ourself, we will give our friends and relatives a long farewell for the next year and a half and begin our travel beyond the old West and where the new begins, and journey towards the setting sun to where that great luminary seems to retire for the night-far out iu the Pacific Ocean. Our theme includes a most prominent period in human affairs-is full and rich with interesting useful thought. The discovery of America and the circumstances with which it is surrounded may be considered one of the most extraordinary events in the annals of the world.
