We watched them as they receded in the distance, the
four companies diverging as they reached the road, and
pursuing different directions, until, one after another, they
entered the forest, and were lost to sight. But long after
we ceased to see them, we heard their songs resounding
through the woods, which echoed and re-echoed with the
prophetic refrain,
"We'll meet ag'in in de mawnin' I"
