The University of Michigan Medical School, as an established leader in medical education and biomedical research, is committed to preparing physicians for academic careers. In order to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of scientific knowledge, students must develop a skillset to disseminate research findings within the medical community. Though students may participate in the peer-review process as contributing authors, there is little opportunity for them to unlock the secrets of the editorial process. The Michigan Journal of Medicine (MJM) seeks to address these challenges.

MJM is a peer-reviewed, student-led publication for medical research. MJM is committed to providing a vehicle for publication of student research, as well as giving detailed critiques of all work submitted. Students supply all content and, with guidance from medical school faculty, assume all editorial leadership roles for MJM, including management of the peer review and editorial process. Editorial roles are primarily held by fourth-year medical students who take part in the Academic Communications course to receive training in evaluation, writing, and presentation of scientific research. Through this deliberate and immersive process, students become masters of academic communication.

The current iteration of MJM has seen expansion of the Journal’s scope to include colleagues in allied health professional disciplines. We congratulate the MJM’s Editors-in-Chief, Sagar Deshpande and Lynze Franko, and the entire editorial team on the publication of this issue, and we thank them for their hard work. Likewise, we express our gratitude to our publishing partner, Michigan Publishing Services — a unit of the University of Michigan Library. We are delighted to be working with such enthusiastic and talented students, and we look forward to future issues of MJM under the leadership of the incoming editorial team.
