Sam[ue]l L. Mitchill ALS to [Catharine Mitchill], December 30, 1806
Correspondence, 1801-1829 [Box 2, Folder 9]
But, I hope I act from a higher motive, the mo- ral or political fitness of the Thing, and comfort myself with the success if I prevail, with the consciousness of having meant well, where I fail. These manifestations of good-will and confi- -dence are however extremely agreable when they are seasonably and respectfully made. And on the present occasion, they are accompanied by additional Rumours, which I find are no secrets here, but known to the quidnuncs, of it's being con- -templated to nominate me for Governor of the Com- monwealth.- This evinces a well-meaning Senti- -ment; but there is so much difficulty in bringing such a speculation into Act, and there are so many accidents between the Cup & the Lip, that I lay no manner of Stress upon the Story. Whether however this is so or not, here is one thing which I know for certain; that you one are charming Wife, and that I love you tenderly. Sam L Mitchill
