Sam[ue]l L. Mitchill ALS to [Catharine Mitchill], December 23, 1806
Correspondence, 1801-1829 [Box 2, Folder 9]
of ill import, and I augur serious tidings; but we must wait the events of Time. Manfredi and his Wife and Girls are still affording entertainment here. When I saw them about a week ago, the House was very thin. They performed nearly the same feats that you be- -held in Newyork, when we witnessed together their exhibition. At first the Ladies had scruples about looking at such unusual postures and attitudes, as these Girls assume. I incouraged them to throw aside such mock modesty and go. - Last Night there was a great assemblage of the big folks, Ladies and all. Not feeling in a Theatrical mood, I did not attend, and therefore lost the Spectacle of the President, the Secretaries of State & War, the Bri- tish Minister and their families, with about two third of both houses of Congress, sitting and behold- -ing the Powers of balancing on the Tightrope; & of Tumbling on the level floor. Such is the public Amusement of this place. -
