Sam[ue]l L. Mitchill ALS, mutilated to [Catharine] Mitchill, March 8, 1802
Correspondence, 1801-1829 [Box 1, Folder 9]
a physician. We then went to hear Mr. Austin preach. The place was the room where the dancing Assemblies are usually held. The Audience was Small & select. He held forth without Bible or Notes, and gave a Dis- course that surprised almost every one who heard him. His mind is as far from steadiness as it has been for a number of years. He is quite as full of Visions, fulfillment of Prophecies, and interpretations of the recondite parts of Scripture as ever. And yet in this enthusiastic flighty and incoherent state of mind, he possesses great powers of enunciation, well-applied ges- -tures, and some of the most vivid sallies of thought that were almost every employed by a preacher. His person and figure are good, and his imagination distracted as it is, abounds with a variety of imagery & metaphors. I shall send you his last publication here, called the "National Barley-Cake." It will amuse you as a No- -velty. Show it to Mamma, that she may know what Austin is about. He carried it about from Boarding-house to boarding house and sollicited the Gentlemen to buy it. In this manner I became possessed of one. I have divide it into two parts, to bring it below two ounces, beyond which we are not allowed to frank. You can easily stitch the parts together
