Sam[ue]l L. Mitchill ALS to [Catharine Mitchill], March 3, 1802

Correspondence, 1801-1829 [Box 1, Folder 9]

The expressions of devotions and piety which your ^ [written above: last] letter contains, deserve to be particularly noticed by me. They are indica- -tions of a well-constituted mind; - they argue a right and proper state of heart - sentiments of that kind proceed from a soul illumi- -nated by that principle which can best deceit and comfort us, long may you continue to be happy where in this world, in pre- parations for the world to come, - This is to be effected, in my opinion, not by austerity, nor superstition, nor by fits of frantic zeal, but by cheerfulness, innocence, virtuous indulgence of social intercourse, and by the moderate enjoyment of the good things, which Providence has graciously bestowed upon us. The Spirit of Christianity is mild and cheerful and social and best displays itself in the performance of all our Du- -ties in all our relations -- "To enjoy is to obey". -- But I must bring this serious sort of a letter to a close - May the Spirit of Grace, my darling, always influence our feelings and conduct. - I have procured a fine and elegant Silver Medal of the President of the U.S. - This I shall send you when an opportunity shall offer. Remember ^ [written above: me] to Margaret and tell her I have received her Letter. -- I have written to you several letters, since I received your last, to which I refer you. Yours tenderly & affectionately as ever Sam L Mitchill - I hope you have managed well about our house - I have written to your uncle on the subject of the projected bridge - & your Brother's prospects - It is quite out of my power to say when the Session will end. --
