Sam[ue]l L. Mitchill ALS to [Catharine] Mitchill, January 10, 1802
Correspondence, 1801-1829 [Box 1, Folder 5]
in our Water. Mr. Agnew has received the whole of this Wharfage and never accounted me for any part of it. But of this fund I told him, the repairs were to be paid. ^ [written above: The Priviledge of] This Wharf was never rented to Mr. Clarke. The Bargain went no further than the old Possession. It is probable however that he has a Design of receiving this third from Agnew, and then bringing me in Debtor for my pro- -portion of Repair out of my own funds; this unwar- -rant ^ [written above: ab] ly taking the proceeds of our third from Agnew's new Wharf to himself. You see what a Schemer the old friend is; and how unfairly he would deal if he could. Agnew's Business is to retain that Wharfage and settle with me, [not?] Clarke. You must desire him to do so and not pay over to Clark. And Clark must pay the quar- [ter?] rent to you and not to Agnew. What re- -mains to be adjusted further, must remain untill my Return. Yours, my sweet girl, with unabated Love Sam L Mitchill Tell Margaret of my kind regard for her and of my having inclosed another Epistle for your joint Use. We have Bachelors and Widowers plenty in Congress. I do not learn that our New York Belle is doing much Execution here. The Story about her & the Grand Sachem is unknown here. It must be merely New York News. -
