506 HISTORY OF SAGINAW COHUTY. liberality truly surprising the people did something even foreign to the principles of the republic, by the establishment of the Germania School; and this at a time when the question of abolishing German classes in the Chicago schools was being agitated. The following statements, dealing with school statistics as well as with the educators of East Saginaw, are compiled simply as a historical summary. In the sketch, which concludes this portion of the city history, the various occurrences and persons connected with these schools are reviewed. The following tables, dealing with the city schools from 1851 to 1881, are valuable, as they present to the reader at a glance the progress of the schools as well as the names of educators and directors.
