Besides engaging ill pastoral work lie is Secretary of the Beacon Publishing (omlpany, is editor of the papel entitled The Beacon, which is a journal devoted to the in terests and growth of the (ongregational clhurches in the State of Michigan. (ur sulbject was born in Patchogue, L. l., N. Y., August 20. 1854. His father was Prof. David B. Beale, also a native of the same place with our subject, as was his wife. The Beales came from England about 1700. (ur subject's paternal grandfather, William Beale, was a farmer in Long Island and there died in 1855. Prof. Beale, our subject's father, was a teacher and was the greater portion of his life employed in educational work. He was Superintend(ent of a number of schools, but his distinction as an educator was attained at the private academy of which lie was Presidenl t at Nortllport, L. 1. It was called Hillside Seminary. When a young man in the early part of 1862 lie enlisted as a Sergeant in Company I, of the. One Hundred and Thirty-ninth New York Infantry and was in the campaign of the James River, when his healtl failed. He received his discharge while yet in hospital after two years' service and on returning to his home continued conducting his private school. The last four years of his life lie had to retire from active duty and made his home witl our subject. IHe died July 4, 1876, at a picnic, immediately after his son had delivered an address, having strained himself in getting into a wagon to return home. For many years hle was an active member of the (Congregational Chi rch and officiated as a lay preacher. Our subject's mother was. previous to her marriage, Miss Esther IHallock and born in Smithtown, L. I. Sile was a daughter of Thomas Hallock, a native of the same locality and was descended from Peter Hallock, said to be the first white settler from Connecticut on Long Island. They trace their ancestry to the founders of the New Haven Colony and back to England. Thomas Ilallock was a farmer and a well-informed and able man. Mrs. Beale resides with her sons. Our subject's father had been married previous to his union with the present Mrs. Beale and by that marriage lie was the father of six children. The second marriage resulted in the birtll of foiur children, our sub)ject being the second one of these. Two of the }nbrothers of the family served through the Civil War, one having been made a Lieutenant, another enlistingl at sixteen anld serving thlroughout the war. The original of this sketch received the greater part of his education iunder his father, graduating at the Hillside Acadelmy when eighteen years of age. He thenl assisted Ihis father in the charge of the school by becoming one of the teachers and afterward was called to the position of Principal of the Bayport school, where lie remained for two years. While there lie was licensed to plreach in the Methodist Episcopal (hurch, having joined that body in 1876 as a probationer and( in 1880 uniting with that body in full membership. Ill 1875 lie became pastor at (Good (;round, L. I.,and remained there for two years. lIe was thle inculmbent of his next charge for three years and thenl went to Rockville Center where lie remained for one year. The next year he was pastor of the (arroll Park Church in Blrooklyn and in 1882 le withdrew froml the Methodist Episco)pal CIlhurch and came to Michigan wlere lie joined the (Congregational Association. le organized the churcel at Cadillac, Mich., and erected an edifice there. In the spring of 1886. lie became pastor of t}le Plymoutll Clhurch, Lansing. In 1888 he was one of the numbter to organize the Beacon l'ublishing Company which had originally been lpublished in I)etroit. Removing tlhe business to Lansing it las since been carried on in this city. Hle is thle Secretary of the company and editor of the organ wh ichl has changed its form from a folio to a qua rto journal. It is a weekly pa)per which enjoys a good circulation, Ihaving increased from two toulsand to thirty-five lundred since lie has had chlarge. Mr. Bleale is a memnber of tile Executive ('onmittee on lhome missions of the State of Miichigan, being Secretary of this committee. In fact every good work that promises to help litraniity appeals to his large and generous leart. The Rev. M r. Beale's first marriage took place at Rowayton, Conn., June 11, 1880, at which time lie was united to Miss Mary E. Smith. She died in Rockville
