500 HISTORY OF SAGINAW COUNTY. Kirby House; the Forest City House, corner of Water and Genesee streets; the Franklin House, by John Leidlein, corner of Franklin and Genesee streets; and the Buena Vista HIouse, conducted by Joln Jeffers, on Water street, near the ferry landing. Previous to 1858 the name Genesee street was substituted for Plank Road street, and the nomenclature of tlhe original village streets entirely revised. EIGHTr YEARS AFTER. To review fully the years of progress between 1859 and 1866, in regard to this city. would in itself be the work of months. However, by adhering to the plan of periodical notice, the advances made by the city can be fully shown, and comparison with the village of 1853 be made easy. Beginning with the newspapers, there were the Daily Enterprise and the Weekly Courier published in the city. The roll of law representatives comprised the names of Messrs. James, Brown, Button, Sturtevant, C. H. Camp, Clark, Loveland, Gage, Lewis, Gillett, Gamble, Henry Hoyt, Harvey Joslin, D. W. Perkins, E. H. Powers, Thompson, Flanders, W. L. Webber. Smith, Wheeler, Herring, Wisner, and Dillingllam —in all 23. The list of physicians met with a similar increase, and comprised tlle names of D. C. Bennett, A. Farnsworth, D. S. Hall, F. W. Herring, B. Hess, O. L. Mason, F. Massbacher, N. Osborne, D. B. Ross, A. B. Spinney, John Thompson, S. W. Turnler, A. VauDusen, Clarles Von Daniels, and M. M. Wheeler; total, 15. The banks were known as the First National, Merchants' National, Saginaw Valley, and C. K. Robinson & Co.'s. The architects and builders were C. V. Moross, I. H. McFarlin, P. McEachron, Thomas Gernain, and Wm. G. Dietz. Ezra Goddard, Sears and Carey were surveyors and engineers. The list of artists comprised the names of Goodridge Bros., James T. Randall, and Wm. Roberts. The booksellers of the city were T. E. Doughty & Co., Frey & Co., and Geo. F. Lewis. Tlie lumber manufacturers and dealers' list contained the names of Burt & Bros., Catlin & Sanborn, Estabrook & Mason, John Hayden, A. II. I-Hunter, C. B. Jones, C. C. McLane, Seth McLane, C. N. Perry & Sons, Charles Post & Co., D. F. Rose, J. F. Rust & Co., T. P. Sears, I. E. Shaw, R. H. Weidemann, Geo. B. Whit. man, Sam W. Yawkey, and Wn. C. Yawkey. The planing mills of the city were operated by Gallagher, Mead & Deering, A. H. Mershon, Spencer & Newcombe. The stave dealers and manufacturers were Win. Binder, C. M. Curtis, F. A. Curtis, Chauncey Dutton,Wm. Roper, Humphrey Shaw, C. Ten Eyck, and E. Ten Eyck. Many of the above named lumbermen operated salt-wells in connection with their mills. The hotels comprised the Bancroft House, American H-otel, Everett House, Farmers', Hibernia, Jeffers, Saginaw Valley, Sherman, Washington, Monitor, Bellevue and Canada.
