PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPIHICAL ALBUM. 325 i - -.. I of the town. lie of whlom we write las ever taken a lively interest in politics, favoring the tactics of the Democratic party. lie has leen Treasurer in Mason for three terms. lie is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and like most of those who took par't in the terrille struggle between North and South, is a member of tlhe (rand Army of the Republic. lie is a Knight of Pythias, a Knight of 1lonor, and also I)elonlgs to the Royal Arcanum. 4."EjI IEN B,. Il IA. (ur subject, al-, tllhougll tlhe proprietor of ole hluntdred alnd A \ forty acres of good land on section 8, l)el' lli Townslhip, Ingham County, llas for lmanly years devoted himself to thle noble calling of tlaching. Iis has been tle sacred i)rivilege to take ytounl minds anid develop and cultivate them, seeiljg tlleml g1row from formless disembl)odied sllapes to tlhings of loveliness, and tlie traniing of thie moral life l1e hals alwaysv considered, not of secondary ill)mortance but tlhe prime object iln his work. First of all, a child must have l)iniciples of lionor an11( ligh-toned purity ingrained into its wlole knlowled(ge and being befolr any kind of a beatutiftul strlctlutle of inltelligencle can le erected. Tis, lie of whlom we have tlie lleasure of writing tlis slhort sketch, has done. Mr. 1lilliard was borni in (lIenango) County N. Y.. archl 2, 1842, land is tllle sonl of )elnnison II. and I lan unat (larvey) I lilliard. tile father a native of Connecticut, born April 3, 1789, and of English ancestry, and tlie mother being born Novemnber 21, 1808, having hler native place in New York State. lie of whom we write waS aboutt four years of age when his parents renoved from their first home to l)elphi Township, about the year 1846. lere le was reared on a farm, receiving tile basis of his education in the commlon schools, after which lie attended a select schlool and finished at the HIigh School at Lansing, this State. Mr. Hilliard begaln his career as a teacher at the age of eighteen years, his first efforts il this direction being in the country schools of his own town ship. His winters were occupied in pedagogic work and tle summers in the work incident to a farm, in planting, cultivating and harvesting, for which lie had a great liking. HIe finally, however, abanldoned country teaching and for the past twenty years has b)een emngaged in teaching in the graded schools in different cities. The perfectly outlined course of study employed at tlle present time, with the new theories in vogue in regard to mental training, have a fascination for one wlio hIas engaged for some time in the work of a teacher, for it has greatly improved, at least in tlhe scope of work if not always in (general thoroughness upl)o the young mind. ()ur subject's marriage took pl)ace Au tgust 25, 1879, llis bride being Miss Augusta M. Smith, a daughter of Frederick F. and.Jane E. (Ross) Smith. She was l)orn in Ionia County, Mich., I)ecember 16, 1858. IHer parents were natives of New York. 1y tlis marriage tlere 1are two children who ]ave coime to Oadden tie om1es a(nd ]learts of their parents. The eldest, Fred S.,was 1)orn Januaryn 21, 1882, and the younger, Robert B., first opened his eyes November 30, 1883. They are 1}oth brligllt and intelligent lads, having for tleir years made marked progress botl in getting strong pl)ysiques and in tlie development of their minds. The original of our sketch was formerly a D)emocrat but of late yearls Ile ha affiliated with the memlnbers of the Farmer's Alliance; striving to seek for lhimself, as well as to help his brother farmers do tlie same, a deeper appreciation among the people at large of the importance of tlme agricultural class. Mr. I Hilliard l1as several times served as School Inlslpector, and lhas been tle melans of lringing ab)out mlany reforms and tmuch inmprovement inl thle district schools in thle coluty to which he belongs. Although interested that the county, and especially the part of it, in which he resides, should have the best local government and the men best fitted for tlle places to be at the head, he has never in any sense been a politicianl. Hle is a mnember of the I)isciples (hulrch and is a generous and devoted tupholder of the belief and doctrines of that body. ()ur subject's father was twice married, first,June 19, 1817, to Polly Ann Miner who was borln May 22, 1 797, and died J.ianuaryv 13, 1837, havi.ng
