The woods being so dense that it was one year before he knew of his nearest neighbor, who was only four miles away. One year later he had his ox team brought in by Mr. Tennant, who settled near him. Smith's father was born in Livingstone Co., N.Y., 18o05, and died 1894. His'mother was born in 1812 and 'is still living. At the age of 19 Mr. Smith settled near Ypsilanti, Mich., at a place called The Grove. Was married 1830 to Ann Alvira Davenport, a native of New York State, and who came to Michigan 1827. Mr. Smith's grandfather, Wm. Smith, was a ship carpenter, and for many years was a sailor on theocean.
