He grew to manhood and received a comm-on school education at the old homestead in Canada, and emigrated to Verona Township, Huron County, Mich., in March, 1882, and -settled in section 12. Married Eve Viola Pugh, who is a daughter of Daniel Pugh. She is a native of On-tario, Canada. They have six children: Harry, 19; Fey, 16; Druit, 14; Vida,, 11; Rex, 6, and Dorothea, 1. CAPLING, JOHN. The son of Thomas and Elizabe~th Capling. Born in Perth County, Canada, April 26, 1838. Was 'brought up on the farm and was engaged in farming in Canada, and emigrated to the United States, coming to Huron County, and settling in the town -of Verona in the spring of 1882, where he has since. resided. Was married in Perth County, Canada, to Augu~sta 'Siebert, whose parents were natives ýof Prussia, on April 9, 1860. There are six children: Lewis, living in Saginaw; Samuel, living in Lincoln T-ownship; A daline, married Win. ýClark and is living in Bad Axe; Alfred and Anna, living at home; Wesley at h~ome. Their home is situated 61/2 miles n~ortheast of Bad Axe. CAPLING, THOMAS. The son of Thomas and Ann Elizabeth Capling. His f ather was a native ýof Sussex, England, and his mother of Germany. His fath-er emigrated from England. to Stratford, Canada, in 1814, and was married in Perth County, Canada, and, the family was composed of 11 children, seven boys and four girls, of which the auth-or of this sketch was the sixth son. His father died in Canada at the ripe old age;of 84. His mother is still a resident of the same town and county in 'Canada and is 84 'years of age. His wife, Salamine, was the sec-ond child, and was born in Oxford County, Canada, March 2, 1853. They were married in Oxford- County, Canada, March 24, 1871, and family-is compodsed of seven children, of -whom five are living: Clara, 32 years old, married to Geo. Thornton, and resides in Bloomfield Township, Huron Counrty; Edward, who is 25 years of age; Ann, who is deceased; Carrie L., who is 22, and married to Frank Lester, and resides in ýSigel Town-ship; Walter, who is 1-9; Odella, who is 14. Their home is seven miles east -of Bad Axe. CO--WPER, MAJOR. Born Aug. 15, 1845. The son of Charles Cowtper and Elizabeth Noithan iCowper, wh~o were natives of England. He received- his education in the' common schools of England and came to the TUhited Stadtes at the age of 14 years. He entered the union army during the civil war, and wits in battles of Pebbles Farm, Gettysburg, battle of the Wilderness, before Richmond, Natchez, south si.de railroad and others. Af ter the battle or Natchez he was promoted to c-orporal for gallantry, a nd' la ter, after ýthe 'battle of City P'oint, on' June. 1864,. he was c~ommissioned Major. Received his discharge in June, 1865, and was granted a pension at that time. Re' served in the 16th Michigan Infantry, Company G, in the Fifth Army Corps and the Third Division. In Nov., 1869, 'he married Miss Rachel Godges, who was born in Sand Beach Towvnship, Huron County, Mich. Mr. Cowper has been in business in Huron County for many years, and was for a number of years pr~oprietor -of theý Half-Way house on the 'State road 'between Bad Axe and Sand Beach, and is well and favorably 'is a graduate of Verona Mills school and resides at home; May, born Dec. 6, 1889, and living at home; Herman, 'born Jan. 8, 1892, deceased. Th~ose of 'the children wh'o are deceased are laid to rest in the Verona cemetery. CLARK, JOHN. He is the son of William D. and Caroline Clark. Father wvas a native of England; mother was also a native of England. Mother and father e'migrated to 'the United States in 1830, locating first in Detroit and later in Oakland C-ounty, Mich., and following this purchased a farm in Troy Township. Father died in Oakland C-ounty, Mich., at agp of 55 years. Mother is 89 years old and resides in Detroit.. The author -of this sketch is 'the f ourth child of a family of five. He grew to manhood in and attended the common schools of Oakland County, Mich. Was manufacturer of stave and, heading and flour mill operator in the village.of 'Clawson, Oakland County. Married Edith White in Royal Oak Township, Oakland County, on May 7, 1874. She was daught~er of William and Mary White, and born Nov. 11, 1854. The author of this sketch was born Aug. 22, 1848. They came to Verona Township, Huron County, in 1884, and locateoi on section 2. They have three children: William G., born April 7, 1875; John H-oward, born June 5, 1878, and Mabel 1., born Dec. 18, 1884. Their home is seven miles northeast of Bad Axe. Mr. Clark, at the age of 17, enlisted in the 22d Michigan Infantry, and after the war formed a partnership with H. J.r B13owers. of Clawson for the manufacture of staves and heading, flour and feed. CUTLER, JO-HN L. Son of Deane P. Cutler, born in Vermont in 1843, and Mary (Pangborn) Cutler, born in 1842, who was a native of Canada. Born in Verona Township, Hur~on County, on 'his father's farm. Grew to manhood in Verona and received his education in the common schools of. Huron county. Follows farming as an occupation and lives on -the farm where he was born. He was the oldest of. five children. DUNCAN, J. H. Father was John Duncan and mother was Martha (Sutherland) Duncan, hoth of 'whom were natives of Scotland. The subject of this sketch was born in Montreal, Canada, and came to Veroh'a Township, Huron County, in 1857, with his pgrents. He is selif-educated and 'has been engaged in 'the meat business and as a sailor. Mr. Duncan served in the union army during the civil war, and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. Married Miss Kate Bailey, who was a native of Canada, in the fall of 1875. There are six children: Robert,.who is 28 years old; W. John, who is 2 5 years old; Fred, w'ho is 15 years old; Elizabeth, who is 23 years old; Katie, who is 20 years ýold, and Mabel, who is 18 years old. Their home is pleasantly situated four miles northeasterly from Bad Axe. DUNLAP, JOHN S. Father was John H. Dunlap, who was 'born in Wayne County, N. Y., July 13, 1829; mother was Aurelia Risley (Dunlap), also 'born in Wayne 'County, N. Y., Aug. 6, 1833. The 'subject of this sketch was born in Wayne County, N. Y., May 24,, 1857, and grew to manhood and received his education in New York state. Married Miss M.- A. Siegler in Oswego, N. V. She was born in'-Oswego, N. V., May 10, 1858. There are six children in the family. Mary Janette, wh~o is Z5 and birthday March 2; George, who is 20 and birthday March 21; Albert, 16 years old, and his birthday on Sept. 18; John, who is 14 years old, and birthday April 8; Frank, 10 years old, and whose birthday is Sept. 24th; Ida May, 7 years old, and whose birthday is May 25th. Settled their present home in March, 1873, which is pleasantly located four miles from' Bad Axe. HERRINGTON, IRVING S. Born April 12, 1858. Son of G. H. Herrington,. a native' of Prince Edward County, Ontario, and Mabel Morden (Herrington), who is also a native of the same county. He. grew to manhood and received -a common school education in Canada, and came to Grindstone City, Huron County, Mich., in the fall -of 1890, and lIater in 1901, moved 'to Verona Township, where he n~ow resides. Married Elizabeth Ludlow, who was born in New York state in 1864, 'at Huron City. They 'have two children: Walter, who was born May 6, 1900, and Laura, who was born Sept. 6, 1902. Mr. Herrington makes a specialty of. stock raising, and has followed sailing, lumbering and farming. Their home is pleasantly located three miles from Bad Axe. HUNT, JOHN. The son -of William and Fanny"Hunt, natives of Massachusetts. Was born in Dane C~ounty, Wis., Jan. 27, 1852. When about one and onehalf years old his parents removed -to Oakland County, Mich., where his mother died -on his sec'end birthday, after which he was cared for by strangers, working on farms summers, as soon as old enough, and attending school winters, doing chores to pay for his board, finishing his education in the Oxford high school. Followed 'teaching and carpenter work a number of years. In the spring of 1878 came to Huron County, settling first in Sigel Township. In 1883 he purchased a farm in 'section 24, Verona Township, where he has since resided. Mr. Hunt was married in 1879 to Laura Noble, the daughter of L.ý S. and Hanna~h Noble of Oxford, Oakland C~ounty, Mich. They have two children: Frank N., born in '1885, and Percy W., born in 1892. Mr. Hunt has always 'taken an active interest in any movement looking to the advancement of Huron County; 'has been supervisor -of his township, helped 'to organize. the Huron County Farmers' Institute some years before it received state aid, was its president a number of years, 'helped to organize the Farmers' Mutual Insurance Co. of Huron County, and 'has been its president for the last nine years; was president of the county fa~ir association three years, and has taken a considerable part in the various farmers' organizations of the county. Harbor Beach) Fe'b. 7, 1851.' Son of J. and Miria. Ludington, Jr. Father a native of Vermont and mother of Ohio. Resided in and near Harh~or Beach until 1864, when he moved to Verona Mills, where he has since resided. Engaged in 'the lumber business with 'his father, and in the big forest fire of 1871 their enti-re property was destroyed. By industry and frugality they regained part of their lost fortune, when the~ second grea't fire of 1881 came and wiped out their property again, after which Mr. Ludington started a planing mill, and has planed lumber for many of the buildings in Bad Axe and vicinity, which the fire of 1881 failed to burn. He has seen Huron County's rapid advancement since -the fire, and his mill is the oldest in the west part -of the coun'ty. Married Eliza Brown in Spring of.1887. ýShe was a native of Sigel -Township, Huron County, and is now 'deceased. There are two children: Alice May, 12 years of age, and Ethel, 10 years of age, who attend school. NE EB, CONRAD. Son of Henry and Anna Catherine Neeb, both of whom were natives of, Germany. The subject of -this sketch was born May 10, 1860, in Waterloo County, Ontario. He grew tov manhfood and received his education in the schooi-s of his native county in Canada. Came to Huron County and settled his pre-sent home in the spring -of 1885. Married Maggie Hinkel, daughter of John W. and Helena Hinkel, both of Germany.. Has been a tiller of the soil most of 'his life, and followed painting and carpenter work for a short time aim,5. T~hey have three children: John C., who is 9 years old, and birthday May 31; Anna Catherine, who Is 6 years old, and whose birthday is Aug. 28th; Louis Edward, who is 4 years old and 'his birthday May 3rd. Their home is located seven aria a, half milee northeasterly from Bad Axe. OSAN.TOSKI, JOHN. Born'.in Poland Dec. 11, 1869. Emigrated in infancy to. this country with his father's family. Married Nellie Wagner at Elkton in 'the fall of 1893, who was born in Tower City in 1875. There are five children in 'the family: Susie is 1 year old; William is 10 years old; Emma is 8 years old; Eddie is 6 years old; Martha is 3 years old, and Lea is 1 year old. Their 'home is located five miles from Bad Axe., PERLICH, H. Son of Charles a nd Mary Perlich, both of whom were natives of Germany. Born in Germany Jan. 11, 1-856. He grew to manhood and received his education in the common s~chools of his na-tive country. Came to Huron County in 1882, and was employed -on the Pere Mar:quette railroad for fifteen years, after which he purchased 'his present farm. His home is pleasantly situated two miles from Bad Axe. PETHERS, JOHN. Born in Kincardine, Ontario, April 2, 1850. Son of Frederick and Mary (Kovey) Pethers. Father was a native of England and his m~other of Ireland. He came to Verona Township at -the age of 9 years, and was a residen't there during the forest fires of 1861, 1871 and' 1881, and in the fire of 1881 had considerable property destroyed. Married Miss Catherine White nee Goodrich, born in Colburn, Ontario, Feb. 12, 1854. There are five children in the family: Jane, born Jan. 2, 1879, living in C-olfax Township, Huron -County; Frederick -Alexander, born Feb. 2, 1887, living in Ypsilanti, Mich.; Mary Ellen, born May 26, 1883, living at home; John Jacob, born May 18, 1888, living at home, and Hannah, born Nov. 30, 1890, going to school. Their home is located five miles northeasterly from Bad Axe. PFAFF, JOHN. Son of Geo. Pfaff.. Born in Heine, Germany, in 1825, and Elizabeth (Holltsmath) Pfaff, born in Baden, Germany, in 1830. The subject -of this sketch was born in Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada, March 8, 1860, and received a comm-on school education, and followed mil ling f or 22 years. Married Miss Mary Miller, July 8, 1899, in Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada. She was the daughter of Henry and Nellie Miller. There were born to them 'two boys: Ernest Henry, who was born July 20, 1891, and Clarence Adair, born Oct. 25, 1897. The family live four miles southeast of Bad Axe. PHILP, THOMAS JOHN. Father and mother were natives of England, Was born April 11, 1845, in 'Hope Ontario. Came to Verona Township, Huro-n County, in 1857. Was a resident of the county during 'both of the big. forest fires, 'the fire of 1881 hurnling him completely out. Married Miss Hannah 'White, who was born in Goodrich, Ontario, in the. 'fall of 1867. The family of children are as follows: Jane, Maria, Hattie, Martha, Edith, William S., John Thomas and Rtalph. Their home is pleasantly situated three miles from Verona Mills and seven miles from Bad Axe..PROCTER, ROB3ERT S. Born in CanadaJune 16,1859. Father was William Procter, born in Ireland in 1819, and his mother was Julia, Shore,..a native of Canada, and who died in 1857. He lived in Canada until he was six years old, xvhen he camne with his father's family to the United States. He resided in Sanilac:County, Mich., until the fall of 18 91 when he came to Huron County and settled on his present farm. Was married Dec. 25, 1884, in 'Sanulac County to Miss Hannah Rourke. She was 'born in Canada in 1843, and was the daughter of Rodger and Mary Rourke. They have three chiNcdren; the two oldest children are twins, James 'and John, and are 19 years of age and reside at home; Pearl is 15 years old and is attending school. Their home is pleasantly located half a mrile north of Bad Axe. SCRIVER, GEO. L.-Born in Quebec, Canada, on Nov. 5, 1873. Was the first of a family of four children of Charles F. and Ellen (Harvey) Scriver, who were natives of 'Canada. 'Came 'to Huron County with 'his parents in 1885. He resides with his Rosie, aged 15; Bird, aged 14; Arthur, aged 13; Lena, aged 10; Louis, aged 9;' Walter, aged 8; Ali-ce, aged 7; Joseph, aged 5; Irene and Justine, twins, aged 4; Lauretta, aged 2, and Jacob, infant. Their 'home is pleasantly located two miles from Bad Axe. STEADMAN, ALBERT. Son of Robert and Mary Ann Steadman, who were natives of Ireland. Father's family was comp osed of twelve childrert, of which the author of this sketch was the youngest. Was born in Lampton County, Ontario, Canada, and was brought up on a farm near the village of Wyoming. Came to Huron County, Mich., June 19, 1889, and settled in section 3, Verona Township, where lie has since resided. Was married to Elizabeth Arnew, who has since deceased, in his home county in 'Canada, and there were three children born to them: George M., who is 24, and Wesley, who is 21. On June 5th he married Emma Andrus, daug~hter of Gee. and Sara~h Andrus, and there were eight children in 'her father's family, of which she was the eighth, and was born April 1st, 1864. There were six children in this family, of whom five are 'living: William D., who is 14; Noble Clifford, who is 12; Duncan Alden, 8 years old; Claude, 4 years old; Baby Grace, 8 months old, and Irene. Mr. Steadman was highway commissi oner f or two years and was elected township treasurer In spring of 1904. SYMONS, RICHARD. Son' of Richard J. and Mary (Revals) Symons, both of whom were natives of England. Born May 24, 1858, at Cornwall, BEngland. Received a common school education in England and engaged in mining. Came to the United States in 1880, and to Verona Township, Huron County, Mich., in the spring of 1896, and settled on his presen-t farm. Married Miss Martha Anna England, who is of English decent. They have two children: William James, who is 17 years old, and Carrie Etta, who is 15 years old. Their holme is pleasantly situated three and one-half miles north of Bad Axe. THOMPSON, GEO. H. Son of Win. Thompson, who was- born near Brock, Ontario, and Margaret (O'Bryan) Thompson, who was born in Ireland. The subject of this sketch was born in Verona Township, Huron County, and is the sixth child of a family of thirteen children. Was educated in the public schools of the county and is a farmer. Married Miss Minnie Stone, -Who was born at Huron City, this county, and is daughter of S. and Celia (Dingman) Stone. They were married in the fall of 1901. They had one child, born May 2, 1892, and died June 13, 1892, and which is laid to rest in Verona cemetery. Their home is pleasantly located one mile and a half southeasterly from Bad Axe. THOMPSON, MICHAEL. Son of William Thompson, wh~o was born near Brock, Ontario,' and Marga'ret (O'Bryan) Th-ompson, -Who was born in Ireland. The subject of -this sketch was born near Brook, 'Ontario, and came to Verona Township, Huron Counity, Mich., in 'his childhood. Received his education in the common schools here and worked at stone work and farming. Married Miss Ida Knapp Jan. 10, 1886. She died in the fall of 1890. On June 11Y 1891, he was again married to Mrs. Dora Knopt, wh~o is a daughter of J. L. Thompson and a native of Illin-ois. They were married at Dixon, Illinois. Mr. Th-ompson has traveled conside-rably. There are six children in the family: Eva May is 17 years old; Harry Knapp is 16 years old; Hazel is 12 years old; Emerson i 0yas old; Norman is 7 years -old, and' Marie is 5 years old. Their home is pleasantly located one mile and three-quarters from Bad Axe. WALLACE, JAMES 0. Father was a native of Ireland,. and his m-other a, native of Canada. Born in Oxford County, Ontario, Nov. 30, 1859. Grew to manho~od and received hi-s ' education in his native county in Canada.. Came to' Bad Axe, 'Huron County, in the fall ýof 18,87, and settled his present farm in th& spring of.1894. Married Roxanna Cooper November 15, 1882; she was daughter of William and Sarah (Mahoniey) Cooper,, her father being a, native of England and her mother a ~native of Canada, and was herself born in Oxford County, Ontario. There are three children In the family: Samuel D., -1-9 years, old; Charles Elmer,- 17'years old, and Mana, 15 years old. Their 'hoemI les antly situated one mile fr~om Bad Axe. WALR-OD, GEORGE B. Son of Horatio N. Walrod' and Sarah M. Curren Waired, both of whom were naltives of New York state. He was the oldest of two children, being born in New York state June 26, 1859. Came to Tuscola County in.-spring of 1871. Married Miss Lydia D. Allard,' who was born in.~ New York -state. They have had three children born to them: Grace, born July 15, 1880; Nelson, July 1-9, 1885; Edward, born 'Sept. 17, 18 93. Moved to Huron County. spring. of 18 89. His first wife died Oct. 10, 18.93. Married on June 6, 1894, Miss Ina Willett, who was born in Ohio. They have had three children born to them:-Mabel, 'born June 10, 1895; Norma, born Aug. 17, 1896; Edith, horn Dec.' 16, 1897. Mrs. Wairod takes grealt pride in the breeding of barred Plymouth Rock chickens anid Imperial Pekin. ducks. Their home is pleasantly located four and a half miles f rom Bad Axe. WOODS, JAMES. Father was James Woods, a native of England, and mother was Elizabeth Woods, a native of Ontario. The author of this sketch was born in the town of Blinen, Oxford County, Canada. 'Educated in the common schools and' came to Verona Township, Huron County, Mich., in 1890. They have one child, which"' was born Feb. 24, 1896. Mr. Weeds was the youn'gest of a fain July 16, 1858. Married Margaret Hamilton, daughter ýof James and Hannah (Riley) Hamilton. Her parents were natives of Ireland. There were born to them nine children, six of whom are living. BRITT, FRANK. Son of James H. and Maria (Ludington) Britt, father naltive of New ' Yo~rk and mother of Canada. His father resi des in Virginia, and his mother is dead and buried in Woods'teck, Ontario, cemetery-. The subject of this sketch was born in Oxford Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada, on Aug. 4, '1862. Married Ettie M.- Miller, daughter of Duncan and Emma (Emmick) Miller, There are four children: Harvey E., Ralph F., James E., Charles R.CLIFF, JOHN. His falther was born in England Feb. 22, 1824, and his mother. was born in. Canada Aug. 20, 1831. The subject -of this 'sketch was horn in 'Canada May 26, 1856. Came to Michigan March 7, 18831 and -settled -his present. farm. Married Addle Reader March.22, 1883. Her father was a native of England and b~orn Jan. 9,. 1829; his mother was -a native of Canada and. born May 4, 1836. 'Children are Mathilda, born Aug. 16, 1886; Richard, born Oct. 1, 1893; Mary, 'born July 18, 1897; Eve-rett Earl, born Oct. 6, 1902.' CONNELL, MAIRTIN. Son of John an d Eliza (Leonard) 'Connell, -natives of North Carolina. The subject of this sketch was born in North Carolina on Jan. 18, 1874. Married Nora Quant, daughter of David and Lavina (Lown) Quantf. There are ýthre e children: Lee, Eldie and Lavelle. DOERR, JO1SEPH. Son of. John and Mary ' ('Gr~ose) Doerr, natives of Germany, -Who emigrated to Ontario, 'Canada. The subject of this sketch was born in Ontario, Canada, 'April 8, 1859. Married Alice Russell May 7, 1866. She was daughater -of James and Catherine Russell, native's'of. England. There are three children: Frederick H., John' J., and Clayton H. ELLICOTT, HENRY. Son of George and Jane,(Burgess) Ellicott, natives of Devonshire, England. His mother is dead and buried in England., The subject ofi this sketch was born 1h C'Cha-rnhamptbn,, England, on Jan. 1, 1852. There were five children in his family, of whom two'are living. FINKLE, JOHN. Son of Alex. and Sophia Waddle. His father was a native of, Ontario and 'his mother,of Ireland. Mother and father both living and residing in Grant T-ownship. Mother is 70 and fa~ther 77. The subject of this sketch was born in On'-tarlo, 'Canada, April 8, 1859. Married Jane Bodey, daughter of Jcohn R. and Lydia Ann (Baxter) Bodey. There are four children: LeRoy M., Reuben John, Verney 'Ethien, Joseph B.
