Morris, formerly was attached to Flint. In 1865 the Catholic people of this vicinity, realizing the inconvenience consequent on traveling to Flint after plodding oxen, and thinking, themIselves amply endowed to build a church of their own, sought for this purpose the authorization of their Bishop-Rt. Rev. Peter Paul Lefevre of the Detroit Diocese. The Bishop consented and the handful of people began the erection of a frame building upon the grounds donated by the late Ven. Christoper Hughes on the Saginaw road. Between 1866-67, the church was completed and services were held at intervals within its enclosure by the priests stationed at Flint. St. Mary's congregation was yet a mere mission church attached to Flint. In 1869 the congregation petitioned the administrator of Detroit Diocese, the Bishop being dead, for a Parish priest of their own. Nothing was done with their petition until Detroit again had a Bishop in 1870. In 1870 the congregation again petitioned their new Bishop-Rt. Rev. Caspar H. Borgess, and were successful. In September, 1870, Rev. Father M. Canters, a young and energetic priest, was sent from Bay City to become the first resident pastor of St. Mary's, Mt. Morris, and Sacred Heart churches, County Line. Fr. Canters was succeeded by Rev. Fr. G. Girard, who remained pastor for six years and then was succeeded by Fr. De Kiere. Fr. De Kiere was a man of note-speaking twenty-two languages with the same ease as he spoke his native Flemish. Fr. De Kiere remained in charge five years and was followed by Fr. D. Coyle, who remained three years. To Fr. Coyle succeeded Fr. Van Stroelen, who up to the present filled the longest pastorate in Mt. Morris. He was there nearly twelve years. To Fr. Van Stroelen succeeded Fr. Slattery. Fr. Slatterv remained two years, and was succeedfed by the present pastor, Fr. Thos. Lubv. Under the administration of Father Lubv the rectorv h.is been enlarged and rebuilt, the mission church at County L~ine rebuilt, and in Mt. Morris, in place of the old frame church, which1 waS so near and dear to the older people, there nov/-,~ stan.ks cne ef tie most beautiful churches in the state-a handsome exemplification of English gothic of the renaissance period.
