Looking toward the Future
Since President Mary Sue Coleman’s 2005 trip to China, the University has signed memoranda of understanding to establish joint institutes with Peking University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Additionally, the University of Michigan has entered into several agreements of cooperation with top Chinese institutions, such as Beijing Normal University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Tsing-hua University, in disciplines ranging from Psychology to arts and design. The University of Michigan Health Service and School of Public Health are engaged in many partnerships with Chinese universities and hospitals to cooperatively further medical expertise.
In 2015, President Schlissel made China his first international destination as U-M president, and furthered U-M’s partnerships in China and connected with Chinese alumni and students. President Schlissel reaffirmed U-M’s commitment to working with Chinese institutions to improve knowledge and well-being throughout the world. The relationship between the University of Michigan and China is stronger than ever. In May 2017, President Schlissel visited China for a second time to attend the U-M Pan-Asia Alumni Reunion, and continued to strengthen the relationship between China and U-M.
The breadth and depth of Chinese studies and China-related engagements at U-M are among the university’s main strategic assets. The University of Michigan is widely recognized in China as well as elsewhere for its contributions and the quality of its collaborations. In terms of total student travel, including both curricular and extracurricular travel, China has now become the number one destination for University of Michigan students. The flourishing partnerships and international prominence enable faculty, students, and the entire university community to reach their fullest potential in a globalizing world.
