ALS, DNA WR RG 107, Presidential Telegrams, I, 275. See Lincoln to Warner, December 22, supra. Colonel Adoniram J. Warner replied on the same day: ``I do not advise that Jno Lenon be pardoned and sent to his regt he enlisted under a false name & I believe with the intention of deserting after drawing his bounty. In consideration however of his age & his conduct since his trial I could recommend that his sentence be commuted to hard labor for life'' (DLC-RTL).
