Following his enlistment in the Eighth Illinois Cavalry on February 6, 1864, he was appointed to West Point, where he reported on June 4, 1864, but left without taking his entrance examination. He enlisted as Frank Judson in the Third Massachusetts Cavalry on July 15, 1864, and was listed as a deserter on September 30, 1864. He enlisted in the Eleventh Connecticut Volunteers under the name of William Stanley on November 26, 1864. See further Lincoln to Ord, January 19, 1865.
