Lt Gen Grant City Point Apl 1 1865
Yours to Col Bowers about the secretary of War is shown to me. He is not here nor have I any notice that he is coming. I presume the mistake comes of the fact that the secy of state was here. He started back to Washington this morning. I have your two despatches of this morning and am anxious to hear from Sheridan

Annotation
[1] D, DNA WR RG 108, HQA, Letters Received, P 214. Grant telegraphed Colonel Theodore S. Bowers from Dabney's Mill at 11:10 A.M.: ``I understand the Secretary of War is at City Point. Present my respects to him, and say we would have had Petersburg before this but for the rain which unfortunately set in the first night we were out.'' (OR, I, XLVI, III, 393).
