A Miss. E. Snodgrass, who was banished from St. Louis in May 1863, wishes to take the oath and return home. What say you? A. LINCOLN

[1] ALS, DNA WR RG 107, Presidential Telegrams, I, 370. Above the date ``13'' as written by Lincoln someone has written ``12,'' but there is no other evidence that this is the correct date. Henry T. Blow replied on March 15: ``Have been sick. What I learn of Miss Snodgrass is favorable and I recommend her return'' (DLC-RTL). Miss E. Snodgrass was banished as a secret rebel mail agent (St. Louis Republican, May 14, 1863). A pass for Miss Snodgrass ``to report to Gen. Pope,'' dated March 18, 1865, has been listed for sale in American Art Association Anderson Catalog 4306, March 4, 1937, No. 144.
