Response to Serenade [1]

March 3, 1865

Sherman went in at Atlanta and came out right. He has gone in again at Savannah, and I propose three cheers for his coming out gloriously.

[1]   New York Tribune, March 4, 1865. Lincoln's remarks were made in response to a serenade by ``a large delegation of New-Yorkers and Poughkeepsians, accompanied by Eastman's Business College band of Poughkeepsie.'' No more complete text of Lincoln's response has been found.
