Annotation

[1]   AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement appears to have been clipped from an envelope. The widow of Lieutenant Colonel Edward F. W. Ellis, Fifteenth Illinois Volunteers, killed at Shiloh, sought to be appointed postmaster at Rockford, Illinois. Annie M. Smith (see Lincoln to Montgomery Blair, July 24, 1863, supra) served as postmaster at Rockford until May 10, 1865, and Anson S. Miller succeeded her.
