[1]   AES, DNA WR RG 153, Judge Advocate General, NN 1884. Lincoln's endorsement appears on an envelope in the record of Christian Emerick of Baltimore, sentenced to imprisonment for the duration of the war on charges of recruiting for the rebel service. Holt recommended that an army surgeon should examine and report if confinement would result in death, and if so, that Emerick should be pardoned upon taking the oath and giving bond. AGO General Court Martial Orders, No. 277, June 10, 1865, directed discharge of Christian Emerick from Albany Penitentiary upon his taking the oath of allegiance.
