[1]   Anderson Galleries Catalog, October 16, 1928, No. 98. According to the catalog description, this item is an autograph letter signed. Edward J. Donahue, Jr., was appointed by Governor Horatio Seymour to act as an inspector for the Democratic party in obtaining votes of New York soldiers in the field. Arrested on October 26, 1864, he was tried on charges of fraudulently signing names of soldiers on voting blanks and sentenced to imprisonment for life. Sentence was remitted three years later. No record of Lincoln's further action has been found. See Josiah H. Benton, Voting in the Field (Boston, 1915) and Stewart Mitchell, Horatio Seymour of New York (Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1938).
