AES, DLC-Stanton Papers. Lincoln's endorsement appears on a letter of General William W. Orme to Ward H. Lamon, January 24, 1865, asking that William McCullough, unfit for duty, be relieved. Private William A. McCullough, Fifth Illinois Cavalry, was the brother of Fanny McCullough to whom Lincoln wrote on December 23, 1862, supra. No record of action in his relief has been found. AGO Special Orders No. 396, July 25, 1865, directed his discharge at Memphis, Tennessee, ``upon receipt of this order.''
