I would like to give Mr. Hammond some tolerably good appointment; but understanding that giving him the place of Internal Revenue Collector in his District, would be embarrassing or disagreeable to Senators Anthony and Sprague, I will thank them to make an effort to find something respectable for him which, would not be disagreeable to them.
