Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter signed by Governor Richard Yates and other state officials of Illinois, November 29, 1864, recommending promotion of Colonel Philip Sidney Post, Fifty-ninth Illinois Volunteers, to brigadier general. Post was brevetted brigadier general of Volunteers as of December 16, 1864, the date of his citation for gallant and distinguished service in the battles before Nashville, Tennessee. In 1893 he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
