[1] LS, DNA WR RG 107, Presidential Telegrams, I, 257. This telegram is in John Hay's handwriting except for Lincoln's signature. An article in The Missouri Republican (St. Louis) for November 16, 1864, announced the court-martial sentence of Second Lieutenant James Berry, Company D, Fourteenth Kansas Cavalry, ``that he be shot to death with musketry, in St. Louis, on the 9th proximo. The charges . . . were that he deserted . . . at Forth Smith in January last, and took away a horse and equipments. . . . John W. Berry, a brother
