Lincoln's endorsement is written on a petition signed by officers of the Third Regiment, Delaware Volunteers, October 16, 1864, recommending Dr. John C. Hutton, hospital steward, who had been forced to resign from the service because of ill health. Hutton is listed in the U.S. Official Register, 1865, as clerk in the office of the Sixth Auditor.
