Indianapolis, Ia. July 20. 1864

All a mistake. Mr. Stanton has not resigned. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   ALS, DNA WR RG 107, Presidential Telegrams, I, 104. Lincoln's error in regard to Wright's middle initial derived from the error in the received copy of Wright's telegram of July 20, 1864: ``Notice resignation of Secretary Stanton & see it intimated that Genl Butler may be named his successor For Gods sake give us Butler . . . the loyal people of the North west will all say amen'' (DLC-RTL). Jacob Taylor Wright was chairman of the Republican State Union Central Committee of Indiana.
