Endorsement Concerning an Escort1Jump to section
I believe I need no escort, and unless the Sec. of War directs, none need attend me. A. LINCOLN
July 4, 1864
Annotation
[1] AES, ORB. Lincoln's endorsement is written on an order from Major General Christopher C. Augur's headquarters, Department of Washington, July 3, 1864: ``If his Excellency the president of the U.S. wishes an escort, Lt. [James B.] Jameson will furnish it keeping the old Es. of his Co. at its present location.'' In December, 1863, Governor David Tod organized the Union Light Guard, Ohio Cavalry, as a bodyguard for the president. Stanton assigned the unit to guard the Executive Mansion, War Office, and Treasury Building.
