Annotation

[1]   ALS, MH. The only periodical by the title Crayon which appears in the Union List of Serials was an art magazine published from 1855 to 1861 in New York City. In view of this fact it seems probable that Lincoln referred to Colonel David H. Strother, whose pseudonym was ``Porte Crayon,'' a writer and artist employed by Harper's New Monthly Magazine, who served on McClellan's staff in 1862 and on David Hunter's staff in 1864, resigning his commission September 10, 1864.
