On April 23 Blair wrote Stanton, ``I respectfully request to withdraw my resignation as major general of the United States volunteers, tendered on the 12th day of January, 1864.'' (Ibid.). On the same day AGO General Orders No.178 assigned Blair to command the Seventeenth Army Corps and assigned Captain Andrew J. Alexander to be his assistant adjutant general with rank of lieutenant colonel.
