Annotation

[1]   ALS, RPB. Reverdy Johnson wrote Lincoln on February 24: ``I take pleasure in introducing to you, Judge E. P. Pitts, of Va. who desires to see you on official business that he will explain. As a loyal gentleman he is most deserving of your regard.'' (DLC-RTL). Judge Edward P. Pitts of Northampton County, Virginia, had sent a memorial to the rebel legislature of Virginia in 1861 stating his loyalty to the South (see OR, II, II, IV, 39-40, and passim).
