[1]   AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement appears on a letter of Brigadier General Nathan Kimball recommending First Lieutenant George Monroe of the Fifty-fourth Illinois Volunteers for promotion to captain and assistant quarter-master. George Monroe, son of Byrd Monroe of Coles County, Illinois, was appointed captain to rank from September 30, 1864. The appointment was confirmed by the Senate on February 20, 1865.
