In compliance with the resolution of the Senate of yesterday respecting the recent destruction by fire of the church of the Compania at Santiago, Chile, and the efforts of citizens of the United States to rescue the victims of the conflagration, I transmit a report from the Secretary of State, with the papers accompanying it. [1] DS, DNA RG 46, Senate 38A F3. The enclosures are printed in Thirty-eighth Congress, First Session, Senate Executive Document No. 10. The report of Thomas H. Nelson, minister to Chile, related the part played by Americans in helping to try to put out the fire and in rescuing victims when the church burned on December 8, 1863. Nearly 2,500 persons lost their lives in the fire.
